The Grey Barn and Farm, a certified organic, one hundred acre farm on Martha's Vineyard was co-founded by Molly and Eric Glasgow in 2009. Seventy-five acres of pasture is dedicated for their dairy herd to graze seasonally, ten acres of woodlands are devoted to their heritage breed pigs, ten acres of edge woodlands serve the wildlife that surrounds them and five acres are devoted to their laying hens, gardens and creamery. Recognizing the impactful role of local, organic consumption in combating climate change, they have steadfastly pursued a mission centered on a lasting commitment to organic, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable farming practices have been a core part of their mission since the beginning. The farm produces 80 percent of its own cattle feed on the island and has converted an additional 140 acres of local farmland into certified organic hay pastures. The Grey Barn has created a carbon reservoir whose annual growth in metric tonnes of sequestered CO2-equivalent, or CO2e, nearly offsets all of the farm’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, their farm is carbon-neutral. Alongside their farm and creamery, the Glasgow family operates an on-site bakery exclusively dedicated to locally grown grains from the region. They also manage a thriving, year-round farmstand that serves as a focal point for the local community. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices produces delicious, traditional foods that don’t weigh on our collective conscience.
